Welcome Message from the Program Director
Thank you for your interest in the training programs in Surgery at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals. Our mission is to provide the finest training available to individuals who are motivated, compassionate and willing to contribute to the excellence of the program for the benefit of all participants.
Please visit the web pages associated with the Case Surgical Residency Program to learn more about specific surgical rotations, faculty biosketches, current residents, recent graduates and the educational conferences. As a part of our ongoing effort to improve the educational experience, conferences and yearly rotations may be modified based upon resident feedback at our yearly retreat. Surgical training is divided among many outstanding hospitals to provide a broad range of experience at the following locations:
- Case Medical Center, which is the primary hospital affiliate with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Case Surgery is a recognized leader in minimally-invasive surgery, including translational research in NOTES.
- MetroHealth Medical Center, which is the regional Level I trauma and burn center and is nationally recognized for contributions in the area of emergency surgery, critical care and endocrine surgery.
- VA Medical Center of Cleveland, which boasts state-of-the-art electronic health records.
- Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, which is traditionally recognized as the top children’s hospital in the Midwest and top five in the country.
- Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, which received the highest programmatic ranking of all NCI-designated cancer centers during the 2007 review.
During recent years our residents have scored well on both the Qualifying and Certifying exams of the American Board of Surgery. A surgery core curriculum has been established which includes focused readings during each surgical rotation, a resident orchestrated SESAP review series, and a surgical skills lab using live animal models and virtual reality simulation models.
